This listing is for a US made Land Rover four (4) adult bike carrier. This listing also includes the original instructions aner and a light board.
I bought this bike rack 18 years ago from a Land Rover dealer in the US because it was the only heavy duty 4 adult bike carrier available at the time. Importantly this carrier fits to any traditional TWO BOLT towing bracket. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CARRIER IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SALOON, ESTATE, HATCHBACK OR ANY OTHER FAMILY CAR. If fitted to a saloon car the push bike wheels will strike the ground and be seriously damaged. This carrier is designed for higher riding SUVs, 4X4s and people carriers.
Please look at the pictures carefully especially the picture that shows several tow bar or hitch variations all of which will work with this carrier. If your tow bar does not present two bolts, one either side of the tow bar or ball then IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR THIS CARRIER. This carrier will hold 4 adult bikes of steel frame construction (heavy) with ease!
The rack has been used on.... Its construction is industrial and the lower under section that attaches to the vehicles tow hitch plate is made of spring steel. This means that when you drive with it fully loaded it literally floats up and down, left and right suspending the bikes and removing nearly all road shock from them. It also has a very clever drop down mechanism that means even with 4 bikes on you can lower the whole top section of the carrier down and away from the back of the vehicle to let the bikes rest on their wheels so you can open your tailgate just brilliant when youre on holiday driving to the south of France and your wife needs the bag at the bottom of your boot at the services!
It lets you open the tailgate wide enough to get in on a landy and on my Chrysley Voyager it is was far enough to let the whole tailgate fully open up vertically. The carrier is showing a little age with surface rust because its been in my garage for the last 10 years unused. Operationally it works without fault and I will show/help the new owner how to fit it to their vehicle. On the light board the fog light lens has a corner missing and I cant test if the fog light bulb is working as my present car is not wired for a trailer fog light. However the two main light clusters for run, stop and turn is fully working and there are no cracks in the lenses.
To fit this rack you remove the two bolts that hold your vehicles tow ball on to the sub frame that comes out from the underside of your vehicle. Using those same two bolts you attach the flat plate shown in the pictures back on to the sub frame where the tow ball was. Then you just hang the carriers lower neck section onto this plate, it just hooks on. Then you take the two silver bolts shown in the pictures and pass them through the carrier neck holes into the flat plate and tighten.
One of these bolts has a slide on lock (one key provided) so it cant get nicked. Then you attach the top two hanger rails (yellow ends) and then you hang and tie on your bikes.Pass a long lockable bike rope through the bike frames, wheels and carrier frame, put on the light board and job done. The following are things Ive learnt from using this carrier so buyers please note these points. The Defender I used had steel wheels so the spare could be left on the tailgate. However if your Defender has the wider alloy wheel as a spare on the tailgate you may have to put your spare in the boot while using this carrier.
This was not a problem on my Freelander or my mates Honda CRV. On one occasion only where I needed to carry 3 lady and 1 male frame (all adult mountain bikes) the combined crank or pedal area got cramped so on one bike only I removed one pedal for the journey. A mix of adult and younger frame sizes is easy to fit and small toddler bikes fit too! On a carrier like this its impossible to stop the bikes from rubbing against each other.
To minimise this I put insulation tape around the frame and fork tubes where they touch each other and this protects the paint very well. But frankly if you have very valuable bikes this may not be the right carrier for you! So with the holiday season approaching if you have a 4x4 or people carrier and you need to carry up to 4 adult bikes with ease then this is the solution!
It will last you for years and years!
